Circle Dances
Circle dances have been a part of human culture for thousands of years. Performed as rites of passage, an invocation of change, or as a mode of community ritual, the circle embodies aspects of connection, unity, and cycles of transformation. I began using dance as a grounding method during the early stages of the pandemic while social distancing and isolating in my home for weeks, often completely alone. Dance has continued to be a way to feel connected to rituals of my past, providing comfort during extreme anxiety.
These video works of ghostly circle dances relate to my paintings by embodying mythic time through meditative movement. With this, dancing becomes a way to express ineffable themes of nature’s mystical aspects near the innermost root of our being.
